2021 in Review

THE PEOPLE’S INAUGURATION: Ushering in a New Era

In January 2021, we launched a national campaign that inspired millions of people to recommit to heal, reimagine, and rebuild America.

We called it the People’s Inauguration. On January 21st, we kicked off 10 days of events nationwide: virtual conversations, artistic expressions, music performances, teach-ins, vigils and around-the-table family ceremonies. Some events focused on grief and healing; others on justice and reckoning, others on joy and rising. All of them had one thing in common: the expression of a “people’s oath” that recommits us to our core values and to one another. In the wake of turmoil, violence, and insurrection, these events brought thousands together around justice, healing, and renewal. Visionaries, faith leaders, activists, and artists lifted their voices to advance a vision of a multiracial democracy – from Rev. William Barber to Alicia Keys. More than 150 partner organizations joined with events nationwide. We reached more than 115 million people; our media coverage spanned CNN to NBC to People Magazine. The People’s Inauguration inspired groups who continue to meet together today, turning their commitments into action.

THE LEARNING HUB: Equipping the Nation

Four years in the making, our online learning hub provides the essential tools and practices to anchor your life and community in revolutionary love.

We officially launched our flagship offering: the See No Stranger Learning Hub! All of the educational curricula, guided inquiries, teaching videos, and meditations are available for free! The Educator’s Guide alone has been downloaded by 500+ educators and community members. The Revolutionary Love Compass is being used in classrooms across the U.S., from a nursing program in Washington state to classrooms at Harvard Divinity School. Educators at universities, high schools, even preschools have adopted our compass using the learning hub! Leaders of all kinds have also put revolutionary love to work for their communities — faith leaders, civic organizations, and online communities of elders, women, and social justice leaders. We created this resource for everyone, everywhere. This is the foundation for more to come.

THE SOLIDARITY VIGIL: Modeling Beloved Community

In a week of severe racial trauma, we created a virtual container for healing, bringing diverse communities together in shared grief and resolve.

In the wake of the mass shooting on Sikhs in Indianapolis and the verdict over George Floyd’s murder, we organized a historic solidarity vigil. The vigil had more than 10,000 participants and 145+ partner organizations. It was a history-making event for the Sikh community, the largest single virtual event in solidarity with Sikh Americans in the face of mass violence. We held 2 1/2 hours of programming featuring more than 30 faith leaders, movement leaders, performers, and a representative from the White House. Participants experienced a tapestry of testimony, witness, music, poetry, prayer, and song — in the Sikh spirit of Chardi Kala, ever-rising spirits even in darkness. We modeled how to center Black lives, begin with Indigenous wisdom, and follow the lead of those on the margins. It was a multifaith, multiracial, multiethnic embodiment of beloved community. Watch the 7-minute vigil compilation here.

THE 9/11 ANNIVERSARY CAMPAIGN: Understanding America 20 Years Later

The 20-year anniversary of 9/11 marked two decades of hate violence, state violence, and war. But we reclaimed it as a moment to reckon with the past and reimagine the future.

We led a full-throated campaign to awaken Americans to the decades-long impact of 9/11 on people of color, with a focus on telling the story of Balbir Singh Sodhi, the first person killed in hate after 9/11. We built a learning hub for educators that features the special 20-year re-release of the film DIVIDED WE FALL for free with a new trailer, a screening guide, and lesson plans for educators. We also released a new educator’s guide for how to teach the book SEE NO STRANGER around the 9/11 anniversary. Then, we launched a digital day of action on 9/15 to make Balbir Singh Sodhi’s name and story as ubiquitous as Matthew Shepard, Vincent Chin, and James Byrd. Thousands of you shared Balbir Sodhi’s story across social media, sent prayers and messages of solidarity to the Sodhi family, and tuned into the livestream from Arizona for the vigil honoring Balbir Uncle’s life and legacy. Our campaign caught national attention, and we told the story on airwaves, in print, and on screens across the nation, reaching millions of people on platforms such as CNN, The Independent, Associated Press, PBS, and NPR.
